pagosa springs
Location:275 miles southwest of Denver on U.S. 160 Elevation: 7079, Population: 1591
Like other towns in Colorado, Pagosa Springs is known for its mineral hot springs - a major attraction for visitors. The Pagosa Springs hot springs, unique among Colorado springs, offer pools located on the beautiful San Juan River with indoor and outdoor healing mineral soaking facilities right in the middle of town.
Only a short distance from Mesa Verde or the Great Sand Dunes, and at the crossroads of several spectacular scenic drives, Pagosa Springs is a great base camp for exploring Southwest Colorado.
In the winter, Wolf Creek Ski Area, just a short drive outside of town, offers diverse alpine skiing and snowboarding with few lift lines and helpful and friendly staff members. Snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also popular area activities.
In the summer, the list of outdoor activities is long. The Anasazi Indian ruins at Chimney Rock Archeological Area take you back centuries. Hike, bike or go on horseback along serene mountain trails to local waterfalls and breathtaking vistas. Raft or kayak down the San Juan River, fish in a nearby stream or secluded lake. Boat or waterski at nearby Navajo Lake. Stroll around the Rocky Mountain Wildlife Park. Visit the Fred Harman Museum where the creator of the Red Ryder comic strip houses original paintings, local history and western movie memorabilia.
The Pagosa Springs 27-hole golf course set at more than 7,000 feet will challenge the best golfer in a stunning setting - watch that ball fly!
