Situated directly in front of the spectacular Collegiate Peaks, the central Colorado town of Buena Vista is a crossroads of sorts. Go north and you get to Leadville. South takes you to Salida, then Alamosa. West is Aspen. East is Colorado Springs and the Front Range.
Not far from town is the laid-back Mount Princeton Hot Springs, where you can relax indoors at one of the pools or settle into a natural hot pool alongside the frigid waters of Chalk Creek.
The Arkansas River runs right through town and is the focal point of a gorgeous city park, which is particularly stunning in the fall, when the cottonwoods turn orange-gold.
The river is a popular spot for white-water rafting, and many companies start their raft trips here. If adventure travel isn't your thing, just sit and watch them go screaming by.
On the east side of the highway, follow signs to the historic district, where cute shops and restaurants and a local museum will provide hours of entertainment.
Make sure to stop outside of town and shoot some photos of the scenery set against the 14,000-foot peaks of the Collegiates. Even for an amateur photographer, it's a shot worth framing.
