Location: 86 miles northwest of Denver on U.S. 40 Elevation: 7935, Population: 1525
Granby, in the Middle Park area of Colorado, falls between two well-known communities - Winter Park, with its ski area, and Grand Lake, at the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Pak. Even though it's sometimes overlooked as a destination in itself, it's conveniently located in the heart of several major attractions.
In winter, you can head down to Winter Park, or you can ski the nearby SolVista resort, a family-style operation that makes it easy to keep track of the kids and caters to telemark skiers. In summer, there's abundant hiking in the nearby Arapahoe National Forest.
Generally less crowded than Grand Lake, Granby offers easy access to the western side of the national park.
Not far from Granby is one of the country's highest-rated guest ranches, the C Lazy U, where visitors can get excellent horse programs and gourmet meals in an elegant ranch setting. The year-round ranch offers a variety of programs - so if it's too snowy to ride a horse, you can ride a dogsled instead.
South of Granby, near the town of Tabernash, the YMCA Snow Mountain Ranch provides an excellent place for family reunions or group gatherings. It too offers a central location for everything from hot springs pools to world-class skiing.
