beaver creek
Location: 110 miles west of Denver on I-70
Home to Colorado's youngest ski resort by the same name, Beaver Creek is a posh community known for its European flavor. Vail's sister ski area has made a name for itself with over 1,100 acres of excellent, mostly intermediate terrain and an accessible resort village where heated walkways link shopping areas and lodging facilities. A sophisticated crowd runs here - the village includes a performing arts center, an outdoor ice rink and escalators transporting skiers to the chairlifts. The dining is exquisite. Numerous world-renowned chefs make Beaver Creek culinary experiences truly exceptional.
Beaver Creek offers a myriad of outdoor adventures for every season, including kayaking in Gore Creek, guided four-wheeling tours along lofty mining roads, or even dogsledding across snowy fields. Challenging and well-designed golf courses sit between Vail and Beaver Creek, and spas such as the Allegria Spa at Beaver Creek's Hyatt are worth the splurge. (Try the Feng Shui treatment.)
Lodging can be pricey, but look for great deals in the off-season. Beano's Cabin provides an amazing experience - a tracked Snow Cat pulls sleigh-riding guests high up the mountain to a quaint, contemporary cabin, where gourmet meals are prepared in wood-burning ovens.
